Following the Bears Loss to the Green Bay Packers, What is Coming Up for the Chicago Squad?
Take a look at the 2011 Superbowl odds in online betting before the big game!
With the Bears arriving off of a challenging loss to the Packers this past weekend, the Chicago squad is looking to the future.
Despite the 21-14 loss over their archrivals from Wisconsin, the Bears are looking to lock in Lovie Smith as head coach and continue his contract, as well as most of his staff.
Smith has a record of 63-49 as the head of the Chicago Bears. The most astounding truth of this year for the Bears is the decreased — nearly nonexistant — expectations that were hosted for the squad at the start of the nfl season. Plenty of predicted the squad would not even make it to the playoffs in 2011. Some well-known forecasts even called for the Chicago football squad ending the season with a record of 1-15, or just as abysmal figures. Jay Cutler reduced his picks from 26 in 2009 to 16 this season. He furthermore improved his passer rating from 76.8 to 86.3, which was even better than the 86.0 he posted in 2008 in his final season in Denver when he set a Broncos record by passing for 4,526 yards. There have been a number of other positive developments: Cutler made plays with his feet-he rushed for a career-high 232 yards-Matt Forte excelled as a runner and receiver-Greg Olsen blossomed into a complete tight end, Johnny Knox nearly topped 1,000 yards receiving and the line showed notable growth during the 2nd half of the season.
The Bears defense carried the squad throughout the year, focusing on All-Pro defensive end Julius Peppers. Linebacker Brian Urlacher furthermore contributed to the Bears defense, making the squad very useful at shutting down enemy football squads. This defense carried the squad through the regular season, playoffs, and to within one match of the 2011 Super Bowl.
This would have been the first time since 2007 that the Bears had demonstrated up at the Super Bowl. In 2007, the Bears were crushed in Super Bowl XLI by Peyton Manning and the Colts, whose head coach was Tony Dungy. This was the first year that any African-American head coach had made it to the Super Bowl, and both clubs had African American head coaches.
So what’s next for the Bears? Following overcoming all expectations in 2010-2011, the plan is certainly to keep Lovie Smith in his position as head coach and try to build upon this years successes. Considering the Bears are the Bears, they might be chronically underranked in preseason football prospects. But as this newest season has demonstrated, even the underappreciated Chicago squad might have a few surprises for everyone in the years ahead.
