The 7th year of High Stakes Poker will be shown on GSN beginning this month, but sadly there have been some modifications and very few of them are great. The show will have a new host as Gabe Kaplan who was on the first 6 seasons is gone. He’s being succeeded by former Saturday Night Live cast member Norm MacDonald. Kara Scott will still be on the show as a co-host.



Modifications
GSN is making some other modifications to the show also and they do not seem positive either. The show will now involve a blend of professionals and amateur players. High Stakes Poker will still have some leading players like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan but none of the members of Full Tilt will be on the show. That means many of the leading poker players on earth is not going to be on the show this year including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Eli Elezra and Gus Hansen. The show will still have Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak but the loss of leading players will certainly be visible. It looks like High Stakes Poker will be sponsored by PokerStars and they didn’t want players wearing Full Tilt attire.

Bellagio
The 7th year of High Stakes Poker was shot at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. The three-hour episodes will be shown on GSN beginning this month. It is possible to even watch the broadcasts in 3D if you have DirecTV even though I have no clue why you would want to watch poker in 3D.

Downhill
High Stakes Poker isn’t destined to be the same. Gabe Kaplan was an excellent host and was highly regarded in the poker public. He was better in mixture with A.J. Benza but he was still great. Norm MacDonald is a comedian who’s not a poker expert. Kara Scott was great in her purpose but she isn’t an analyst. The days of gaining insightful poker commentary appear to be over and that is a shame. Gabe is a very great poker player and understood the high stakes match. He will be missed. Now it is possible to just hit the mute button because you’re not going to hear anything insightful from MacDonald. The other difficulty for High Stakes Poker is the loss of each of the Full Tilt players. Dwan made the show worthy of viewing all by himself. He will be missed as will other leading Full Tilt pros.
